Stovall Family Scrapbook
Our oldest known ancestor in this line is George Stovold, born about 1555, died February 16, 1609, Cranley, Surrey County, England. The Stovall surname has been through some interesting changes as many surnames have through the ages.
His Grandson Bartholomew Stovall, born August 24, 1665 in Albury Parish, Surrey County, England was our original Stovall immigrant. He died in Powhatan County, Virginia in 1721.
Our direct line ancestor, John Stovall born about 1700, Granville Co., NC was a Patriot who served as a Private in the North Carolina Militia during the American Revolutionary War.
Benjamin Lucas Stovall, born April 26, 1821, Odenville, St. Clair County, Alabama, was a Confederate Soldier serving in Captain Bickham's Company (Caddo Militia), Louisiana. He has a CSA marker on his Headstone. He died March 6, 1865. I do not have his service record to be able to determine if he died from wounds, disease, or if he had been officially discharged at the time of his death. He is buried at Transport Cemetery in Winn Parish, Louisiana.
Stovall, Louisiana (which is no longer in existence) was founded by our Louisiana Stovall ancestors. I am doing more research on the town itself. I will add to this as I have more information.
Much of my information on the Stovall line came from research started by my Dad, Billy Houston Williamson, Sr. prior to his death in 1982. In his research files, I found many letters from Loyce Smith Robbins written between 1979 and 1982. She was a double cousin on the Stovall and Williamson side. In her letters she mentioned a 390 page manuscript she had been working on for 39 years. She also supplied Dad with paper photocopies of pictures of many Stovall Families and Family members. Through nothing short of a minor miracle - I located Loyce's collection. She had donated it and the original photos to Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana.
I have been fortunate to make the acquaintance of Donald E Bishop who has developed and owns the largest Stovall descendants database in the country. He has been working on it for 20+ years. He has been kind enough to send me a report on the descendants of Benjamin Lucas Stovall containing 859 individual names. I am in the process of data entering those families I did not have information on from his work. THANK YOU so much Don for all your hard work and dedication - we truly owe you a debt of gratitude!!! UPDATE - Don has allowed me to upload his database and host it on our website to share with all. Be sure to check his database out in the genealogy section. It is truly amazing!
We also owe a big THANK YOU to the staff of Louisiana Tech Library, Special Collections Division for the digital copies of those original photos. They had all of the photos Loyce had copied for Dad and a few more.

Descendants of Benjamin Lucas Stovall

The Headstone is obviously much newer than the dates of death. Transport Cemetery in Winn Parish, Louisiana is the final resting place of many of our Stovall Ancestors. Descendants still meet there every memorial day to clean and care for the graves of loved ones still remebered today. The tradition may have been started by "Bashie" Stovall Pullen. Her obituary praises her work and dedication to being a life-long care taker of Transport. The Charcoal Portrait is of Elizabeth Warren Stovall - date and artist unknown.

This Portrait was found by Dr. Paul Peters in the Attic of his
grand parents old home place. He salvaged it and has the original.
Thank you Dr. Peters for sharing this with us.

WINN PARISH AS I HAVE KNOWN IT
BY H. B. BOZEMAN
SEPTEMBER 29, 1967
Above is a picture of Trustees, Teachers and Pupils of the STOVALL COMMUNITY SCHOOL of Jackson Parish, Louisiana, during the summer of 1892--75 years ago--It has been made available to me, by Mrs. Loyce Smith Robbins of New Albany, Mississippi.
Despite the fact that this old photograph is pretty well scratched up, it has great historic value, for a number of reasons. One of them is that those in this old picture, and hundreds of their descendants became, or have become prominent in the business world, the professions of law, medicine and education, and in the sports world as college and pro-football players.
Mrs. Loyce Robbins says she got this old Stovall School photograph from her mother, Mrs. Alma Stovall Smith Faith, who died here last March--that her deceased mother; her uncles, Morgan, Lee and Logan are in the picture; most of the other children in the picture were cousins of her mother, Mrs. Alma Faith.
