Hilbun Family Scrapbook
Section I - Letters and Documents
I have very sparse information on the Hilbun family. I have been able to find many of the descendant lines of Jane's half brothers and sisters and some of her full brothers and sisters. I know many migrated to Louisiana and some on to Texas. The last name apparently has been through some changes from Hillborn to Hilburn to Hilbun, which does not make tracing the ancestry easy. I have 2 letters from Hilbun family members:
Letter from Elias B Hilbun to his sister Emily Louise Jane Hilbun Houston, dated November 5, 1885 from Buffalo Gap, TX - He calls Jane, Eliza Jane in the letter. We were always told her name was Emily Louise Jane Hilbun. I have not found one official record to document her full name. Even the Houston Family Bible and her Grave marker simply call her Jane. His letter gives a list of all "their mother's children" and their birth dates. Jane's is off by one year according to her Grave Marker, which bears a date of September 23, 183o.
Letter from Louis Hilbun to his cousin, George Lafayette Houston, dated October 12, 1884 from Buffalo Gap, TX - Note the post mark on the envelope says 1885 - He either mailed this letter a year later or had the year wrong in the heading of the letter. Louis is the son of James Bruce Hilbun an older half brother of Elias and Jane Hilbun. He speaks of his Uncle Elias and wanting a picture of Aunt Jane. The picture we have of Jane could be older than I've estimated and could have been made to fulfill this request.
Frederick Hilbun Family Bible - This is a copy Family Records section of the Frederick Hilbun Family Bible. Frederick Hilbun was Father of Elias and Jane cited above. This copy was sent to me by Joel Hilbun of Baton Rouge, LA. Joel is a descendant of Stephen Newberry Hilbun, another of Frederick's sons by his first wife. Joel - Thank you so much for sharing this with us!!! (He does not have the original, but was given this copy many years ago.) I believe Elias had the Bible when he wrote the letter above, and one of his descendants has the original in their possession.
